What time do the races start?

Half Marathon – 7:00AM
10K – 8:00AM
5K – 7:45AM
There will be no Zero Mile this year. Watch for its return in 2019.

Where do the races start/finish?

Races Start and Finish at Cooper Center on Wright Road in Volcano Village

Where is the Half Marathon turnaround?

The Half Marathon is a loop race.

Where is the 10K turnaround?

The 10K is a loop race.

Where is the 5K turnaround?

The 5K is a loop race.

Where is the Race Number to be worn?

On the front.  Safety pins will be provided.  Be sure number is not crumpled and completely visible coming through the Finish Line. The Timers will remove the lower tag of the number at the Finish Line.

What is the elevation and what will the weather be like?

Volcano Village is at 4,000 feet elevation.  Early temp’s in the 60’s by 10:00AM, upper-60’s. Expect rain – you are running in the rain forest. DRINK at every Aid Station.

What is the race course like?

5K  & 10K are mostly  flat with a slight elevation change. The Half Marathon has rolling hills with an elevation change of 600 feet.


How much are the entry fees?

Half Marathon – $80
10K – $40
5K – $30
(19 & under & over 65 always $30)

When do late fees begin?

After May 14, 2017:
Half – $85   10K – $45   5K – $30

After July 31, 2017:
Half – $95   10K – $55   5K – $35

What are the Divisions for Half & 10K?

Top 2 in each age division M/F
19 & under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70 & over

Where can I register late and pick up my packet

Thursday. August 16, at Palace Theater in Hilo from 2:00PM – 5:00PM
Friday, August 17 at Cooper Center in Volcano Village from 1:00PM – 5:00PM.
There is No Race Day Registration for the Half Marathon.
T-shirts not guaranteed after July 15.

What if I want to change to a different Race?

There will be a $5.00 charge to change to a different race.

When does Registration close?

Online registration for all races closes Tuesday, August 14, 6:00PM Hawaii time

Onsite registration

  • For the Half Marathon registration closes at Packet Pick Up Friday, August 17, 5:00PM.
  • The 5K &10K can register Friday at Packet Pick Up and race morning until 7:00AM at the Cooper Center.

Can I get a refund or let someone else use my bib?

We adhere to the standard running industry policy, all entry fees are non-refundable and non-transferable for any reason including natural disasters. This is noted on our registration application and when you register for any of our events you agree to this policy. You may not give or sell your number to another individual; this will result in disqualification.

Free Keiki Runs

What time are the Keiki Runs?

1-4 year old – 100 Yd Dash 10:00AM
5-7 year old – 200 Yd Dash 10:20AM

When can I register for the Keiki Run?

Registration is now open for the Keiki Run. You can register online or mail in an application. Links to both can be found in the Green Banner at the top of this page. As noted above you can also register at the Palace Theater on Thursday, August 16, and the Copper Center during packet pick up on Friday, August 17 and at the Cooper Center on race morning until 9:30 am.

Tee-shirts, Medals & Photos

Where do I pick up my Tee-Shirt?

  • When you pick up your Race #.
  • T-shirts are not guaranteed if you register after July 15

Are there Medals for Finishers?

Medals are for the Half Marathon Finishers only.


Can I purchase photos of the race and of finishers?

We do not have an official photographer. However, our staff and volunteers will be taking many photos throughout the day and we will post them on the Volcano Rain Forest Runs Face Book page after the event.

When will the awards be presented?

9:30AM: Top 3 Male and Female winners all races

10:30AM: Triple Crown, Triple-Triple Crown and Age Group Awards – 1st & 2nd Male and Female all races

What if I miss picking up my award?

It can be mailed by providing a shipping/handling fee

Aid Stations, Medical Assistance, Restrooms

Where are the Aid Stations?

Aid stations are located every 1 – 1.5 miles

What products will be distributed at Aid Stations?

Electrolyte drink, water and ice.

What if I need First Aid?

Vaseline & Band Aids will be at every Aid Station and at the Finish Line.

What if I need Medical Assistance?

There will be roving medical on the Race Course and at the Finish Line.  All aid stations will be able to communicate with medical personnel.

What if I need to use a toilet?

There will be portable toilets at every aid station on the Race Course and public restrooms at Start/Finish area.

What if I am unable to finish the race?

  • Contact the nearest Aid Station.
  • Also, please inform the timer located at the finish line

Lost Items

Is there a lost and found location?

Any items found will be held for pickup at the registration table/t-shirt table, until the end of all races.

Where is the closest ATM Machine?

They are located in both stores in Volcano Village, which is about 1/2 mile from Cooper Center.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park open?

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is closed at the summit. The Kahuku Unit will be open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 17, 18 and 19, 2018 . There is no entry fee at the Kahuku Unit. Spend time having a park experience in the beautiful Mauna Loa section of the National Park. Hikes, ranger programs and other activities will be available every day. A 45 minute drive from the village. Make a stop along the way  to see the turtles at Punaluu Bay the Black Sand beach or maybe even take a hike out to the Green Sand Beach in South Point.

Is any part of the races run within the Park?

No. All the races are run in Volcano Village.

Places to Stay

Are there any Camp Grounds?

The National Park Campgrounds are closed due to the current eruption and Summit Unit closure.

Are there any B&B’s in the area?

Many – Google “Volcano Village B&Bs” or “Volcano Village vacation rentals” or AirBnB or check VRBO for vacation rentals by owner.

Are there any lodges in the area?

  • Kilauea Lodge in Volcano Village is open
  • Hilo – 30 miles away has many Hotels
  • The Volcano House is closed due to the current eruption and Park Summit Unit closure.
  • Kilauea Military Camp is closed due to the current eruption and Park Summit Unit closure.


Is there parking at Cooper Center?

No. There are many designated parking areas within walking distance of the start/finish area.
